The monster we executed today
deserved it surely
in keeping with
our historical Old Testament
eye for an eye mentality

We tell ourselves
retribution is justice
to make our collective sin
a little more palatable
as we rationalize away
our role as executioners
in this God forsaken society

Bury the beast we shall do

and the next one too

as violence gets perpetuated

and morbidly institutionalized
